Today I have my best friend and sewing mentor guest posting! Megan is a tremendous crafter, quilter, and baker. I always love receiving her baked goods. Not only are they so tasty, they are always wrapped simply yet beautifully. Even my boys, who are men in evey sense of the word and don't really care about how a package is wrapped, make a comments about how "Miss Megan's gifts are always packaged so nice." So, I asked her to give us one of her favorite ways to package baked goods.
Meet Megan from Make It Snappy...
Hello, Friends! I was so excited when Heather invited me to PRESENT at her Gift Wrap Party. Today, I’m going to be sharing one of my favorite packaging ideas, which features some of my favorite elements:
A delicious treat
Recycled [read: free] tin
Stuff I found at Target
So you’re whipping up some special Christmas goodies, but once they’re out of the oven, how are you going to package them for delivery? They will be just as tasty presented on a plain paper plate covered in plastic wrap, but we’re going to make these extra cute (and even easier to transport) with a few easy steps.
First, select your treat. In this case, I’ve used the super good Double Chocolate Peppermint Crunch Cookies. The most important thing - aside from testing your recipe to make sure you can gift it with pride - is to pick something which is going to fit inside your tin.
Next, gather your supplies. For this project you will need:
Wrapping paper
A tin with a lid (Republic of Tea tins are great!)
Double-sided tape
Circle punch (optional)
Now, I like the somewhat chancy Republic of Tea, and had a little stockpile of totally-useful-but-for-what empty tins in my pantry. If you happen to have one on hand, you’ll want to peel off the labels and wash it thoroughly. If it still smells of the tea, give it a rinse with vinegar or baking soda. Then, dry it in a low oven; you don’t want it rusting!
*If you don’t happen to hoard empty tea tins, you can probably find similar ones at The Container Store or a dollar store.
Next, cut a piece of wrapping paper to fit your tin. I happened to have some of this *perfect* candy-stripe paper from the dollar bin at Target in the closet. Your piece should fit exactly the height of the tin (from the upper edge of the ridge around the bottom to the top of the tin), and then you’ll add about ¼ inch overlap when measuring the width. Tack one side down with double-sided tape, wrap it around the tin, and secure it with another strip of tape.
Now for the lid. Cut a 2-inch circle from the piece of leftover wrapping paper, either by hand or with your circle punch. Attach to the top of the lid with double-sided tape.
You can then add a label across the center, for a finishing touch, or - if you don’t have any labels on-hand - just let ‘em be surprised! (It’s classier when you don’t smudge chocolate on the label….)
Hope this helps as you’re making your holiday gift plans!
I am usually a "thrower" (definition - opposite of pack rat), but I will definitely be starting an empty tea tin collection just for this purpose! Thank you, Megan! And let me just say, those cookies... they are absolutely delicious! I've had personal experience.
